“1923” recap: A crippling blizzard makes the Duttons' bad winter much worse

The latest episode of 1923 continues to build on the tense, harsh environment the Duttons are enduring. This week's installment, titled "The Rapist Is Winter," highlights the relentless power of the blizzard and the many struggles facing the characters.

Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), ever the opportunist, spots skiers in the Montana mountains and sees a chance to profit from the sport, further cementing his ruthlessness and greed. Meanwhile, Jacob (Harrison Ford) faces a legal battle as he works with Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick) to free Zane (Brian Geraghty) from the consequences of his marriage to an Asian woman, navigating the racial prejudices of the time. However, Jacob’s attempt to help Zane is complicated by his condition after the beating and the continuing hostility in town.

Back at the ranch, Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph) faces danger after being attacked by a wolf, raising fears she might have rabies, while Cara (Helen Mirren) takes charge, summoning a doctor in a desperate bid to protect her. Teonna (Aminah Nieves) and her family have their own tensions, learning they’ve been staying on land they didn’t have permission to, and they may need to confront yet another set of challenges.

The episode underscores the harsh realities of life during this period and the constant battles the Duttons face—both external and internal—as they attempt to survive a world that is unforgiving. Spencer’s journey seems to be coming full circle, but the question remains whether he’ll make it back in time to save his family from the worsening storm and its fallout.
